For James Ledger, running has never simply been about getting from the start line to the finish. It is about trust, resilience, partnership and continually challenging what people believe is possible.
James is a Welsh visually impaired athlete competing at an elite level in para athletics. Racing with a guide alongside him, every performance is built on an extraordinary level of communication and trust - two athletes moving as one, at speed, with fractions of a second making the difference.
But James’ story is about far more than athletics.
Finding His Way In Sport
James’ journey has been shaped by adapting, learning and refusing to allow visual impairment to define the limits of his ambition.
Athletics gave him somewhere to test those limits.
What began as a pursuit of performance developed into a career at the highest levels of para sport, representing Wales and Great Britain and competing on major national and international stages.
Behind those moments are the parts rarely seen: the training sessions, guide partnerships, setbacks, preparation and relentless repetition required to make elite performance look effortless.
Running On Trust
For a visually impaired sprinter, success is never an individual pursuit.
James races alongside a guide runner, connected by a tether and relying on rhythm, communication and complete trust. At full speed, there is little room for hesitation.
That partnership has become one of the most powerful parts of James’ story.
It demonstrates something that extends well beyond athletics: independence does not always mean doing everything alone. Sometimes the strongest performances come from understanding who you need beside you — and learning how to work together exceptionally well.
Representing Wales
Representing Wales is a significant part of James’ identity as an athlete.
Pulling on the Welsh vest means carrying something bigger than an individual result onto the track - representing his country, para sport and the athletes coming behind him.
From domestic championships to international competition, each opportunity to race is another chance to increase the visibility of para athletics and show the level of performance, professionalism and ambition within the sport.
The Next Chapter
James is still writing his story.
There are races still to run, performances to chase and ambitions that extend far beyond what he has already achieved. Alongside competition, he is building a platform through which he can work with organisations and brands that genuinely align with his values, contribute to conversations that matter and help create greater visibility for para sport.
The goal is not simply to be recognised as a successful para athlete.
It is to be recognised as an exceptional athlete, who happens to compete in a different way.
